The 14- to 15-year-old is making the entry into the third major seven-year cycle of human development. Adolescents at this age are driven by a powerful but often chaotic willpower. 9th graders experience an inner turbulence characterized by a clash of extremes, feelings of isolation, and a newly-awakened capacity for causal, intellectual, and critical thinking.
Young people at this age begin transforming accumulated knowledge into personal insight. They question rules, test boundaries, and experience a profound desire to form their own independent judgments about society, science, and morality. The curriculum in a Waldorf High School is intentionally designed to meet the psychological polarization the adolescent is experiencing.
Waldorf high school teachers are trained to counter the students’ intense emotional projections by demonstrating personal mastery, objective professionalism, and a constant strive for inner self-development. Rudolf Steiner lectured that teachers should not force abstract theories or rigid dogmas onto 9th graders. Instead, lessons must train the student’s eyes and mind to observe real-world phenomena accurately, allowing them to derive their own concepts.
To guide students from subjective emotions toward objective clarity, Steiner indicated that the 9th-grade curriculum must emphasize accurate observation, polarization, structure, and material transformation.
