Congratulations to Highland Hall senior Najah Diop for receiving the Silver Level Service Award from President Barack Obama.
Highland Hall Waldorf School congratulates 12th grade student Najah Diop for receiving the Silver Level Service Award for outstanding community service from President Barack Obama. She earned the Presidential Service Award in June of 2012 for performing over 176 hours of community service during the 2011-2012 program year for the YWCA as a volunteer in a leadership role promoting community action and service, racial justice, as well as gender equality and other social interests. Jack and Jill of America was the certifying organization for the award. By June 2013 Diop expects to have reached over 800 hours of community service since she began volunteering with the YWCA in 2009.
“We’re very proud of Najah for receiving this honor,” says Lynn Kern, Highland Hall’s Administrative Director. “She exemplifies the leadership skills and social responsibility Waldorf education strives to foster in all our students. Highland Hall Waldorf School’s mission is to educate young people so they are capable of meaningful social action. It is a joy to see Najah demonstrate this with such passion and commitment.”
Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was founded by Marion Stubbs Thomas on January 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, Jack and Jill boasts over 220 chapters nationwide, representing over 30,000 family members. Through service projects, Jack and Jill of America creates a medium of contact for children to stimulate their growth and development.
The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.
